Is Brain.fm right for you?

Use Brain.fm for a listening session with a named mode, not a cue for a video. The monthly and yearly cards are explicit, and the try-for-free line still does not say how many days pass before $99.99 billed annually. Timer and Interval share one break-duration sentence. The five-minute line and the 119% sentence remain the site's claims.

A good fit for

  • A listener who will choose a named activity and leave the audio running.
  • Someone who wants the ADHD-labeled high neural effect setting the homepage describes.
  • A team or student who will contact the company, because the FAQ only says special pricing exists.

Know the trade-offs

  • The try-for-free line does not state a number of days before $99.99 billed annually.
  • Timer and Interval are both written as a count-down timer to track your break duration.
  • The 119% line and the five-minute neural-activity line are the company's claims.

Activity modes, timers, and the science lines shown on the site.

Choose an activity instead of a track to download

The homepage calls this the only music app made with modes for different activities in your life. Focus labels are Deep Work, Creativity, Learning, Light Work, and Motivation. Sleep labels are Wind Down, Sleep and Wake, Deep Sleep, Power Nap, and Guided Sleep. Relax labels are Recharge, Destress, Chill, and Unwind. Meditation splits into Guided and Unguided. Sleep copy says delta wave-enhanced audio promotes healthy rest and names a Power Nap category for short, restorative sleep. Relax copy says you reach deep levels of relaxation with Alpha wave-enhanced audio. Meditate lists guided visualizations, body scans, and thematic meditations.

Set a work clock, a break clock, and a modulation level

Infinite is a count-up timer to track your work duration. Timer is a count-down timer to track your break duration. Interval is a count-down timer to track your break duration. The count-down lines match, so a work-then-break loop is not documented and no default minutes are shown. The focus list says no lyrics or intrusive sounds designed to prevent distraction, then extra-long tracks to avoid interruption. Modulation levels can be dialed up. The block says the music is composed by humans and names neuroscientists. Thousands of hours of music and natural soundscapes is the homepage figure. The pages do not say you upload audio.

Read the attention and ADHD lines as the site's claims

The homepage says our technology enhances and promotes coordinated neural activity in just five minutes, and patented audio technology proven more effective for focus than binaural beats, Spotify, and YouTube focus playlists. It says research funded by National Science Foundation and published in the journal Nature Communications, then that focus music has been proven to boost focus-associated beta brainwaves by 119%. Those lines are the company's claims. The ADHD block says the first music app designed for ADHD and calls the layout simple, clean, and distraction free. High neural effect music is shown to boost attention networks for ADHD brains, in the page's words. The pricing page names grant NSF-STTR#1720698.

Sleep motion, focus filtering, and where it plays

The pricing FAQ says Brain.fm is not binaural beats. Sleep music uses 3D spatialization to produce relaxing auditory motion, called rocking on the page, and focus music filters out high frequencies that can otherwise be distracting. The homepage lists delta 0.5-4 Hz, theta 4-8 Hz, alpha 8-12 Hz, and beta 12-30 Hz as ranges translated into volume modulations. Playback is available on Web, iOS, Android, and Desktop, and the pricing page says no limits, all access. The terms require internet, Windows 7 or later or OS X 10.8 or later, iOS 10.0 or later, and Android 5 or later.

Ways to use Brain.fm

Hold a focus block on one named mode

Is to pick Deep Work, Creativity, Learning, Light Work, or Motivation, then start Infinite as a count-up timer to track your work duration. For a break clock, use the count-down timer to track your break duration. Nothing on the public pages says the app grades the work you finished.

Move to a wind-down or sleep activity

Leaves focus modes for Wind Down, Sleep and Wake, Deep Sleep, Guided Sleep, or Power Nap. The sleep section says delta wave-enhanced audio promotes healthy rest and describes a Power Nap category for short, restorative sleep. Treat that order as suggested listening, not a sleep study.

Try the ADHD-labeled high neural effect setting

A suggested use is the High Neural Effect setting the ADHD section points at attention. The page says it is shown to boost attention networks for ADHD brains. That suggested use is the vendor's framing.
