Universal Modder

Universal Modder is a toolkit a coding agent uses to mod a PC game you own. The repository includes Agent Skills, the um CLI, fal commands for images, 3D, and audio, and field notes. Universal Modder still needs that game installed. An engine playbook is not a promise that every title on the engine loads.

Is Universal Modder right for you?

Use Universal Modder when you can check one owned PC game yourself. Skip it for a pack of every release, or for an online client with anti-cheat.

A good fit for

  • Giving a coding agent one small change for a game you own, then looking at it in that game.
  • Turning one generated picture into frames an engine can load, including a 3D model from the game camera.
  • Reading the field note for that game before you ask Universal Modder for a new route.

Know the trade-offs

  • The README pitches almost any PC game you own. Twelve engine playbooks are investigation notes.
  • The README refuses online games with anti-cheat, cheats against other players, and bypasses of anti-cheat, DRM, or ownership checks.
  • MIT covers the Universal Modder code. Blender is free and open source. Model calls, fal API use, compute, the game, and the agent's plan are separate costs. No call price is printed here.

What Universal Modder walks through

Scan the install, then pick a route

Universal Modder's game-recon pass looks up prior notes, engine and version, managed or native code, anti-cheat, loaders, save folders, and a community route, then writes MODDING_PLAN.md. um scan finds Steam, Epic, and Xbox installs and ranks routes.

mod-any-game holds twelve playbooks: Unity, Unreal, .NET/XNA (Terraria, Stardew, Celeste), Godot, Source 1/2, Bethesda, Minecraft, Age of Empires II / Genie, one group for RE Engine, FromSoftware, GTA, Cyberpunk, and Baldur's Gate 3, native C++, indie engines (GameMaker, RPG Maker, Ren'Py, Paradox, Doom, HTML5, LÖVE, Java), and retro decompilations. A name there means Universal Modder has a written approach, not a pass mark for every release.

Two asset routes the figure labels

The copied figure is the map Universal Modder publishes for art. The 3D row is labeled um fal image, then um fal model3d, then um render3d --preset aoe2 with 16 headings. The 2D row is labeled um fal image, um sprite cutout, um sprite fit --size 64x26, and a panel marked in game (tModLoader). The README says Blender is required for the 3D-to-sprite render.

Those labels match two projects in the repository. Fal Arsenal, under examples/terraria-tmodloader, lists a homing missile launcher, a tactical nuke with a crater and a mushroom cloud, a chain-lightning rifle, a black-hole gun, an orbital strike, three new enemies, and a two-phase Drone Mothership boss. It says every sprite came from fal. San Franciscans, under examples/aoe2-de-civ, is an Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition civilization with a Robotaxi unique unit, Delivery Drones, a Transamerica Pyramid wonder, and a reverse-engineered .sld writer. Both are the author's builds inside Universal Modder, not captures from this site.

Check the running game, then leave a note

Universal Modder continues past the image: backups, a check in the running game, a showcase, and a field note. um backup snapshots save folders. um win launches, screenshots, sends input, and records on Windows, including from WSL.

knowledge/ notes are for the next agent and go through pull requests. A note should record versions, the route, the check, and gotchas as symptom, cause, and fix. INDEX.md lists them. A working mark stays with that note. Universal Modder does not extend it to today's patch.

Three examples, and no mod shop yet

Universal Modder keeps Fal Arsenal, San Franciscans, and the Minecraft-in-GTA-V passthrough as source and notes, not ready-made mods. A publishing hub is described as coming next, so this page links the repository rather than a hub or a third-party guide.

Ways to use Universal Modder

One new item in a game you own

The case study behind Universal Modder's Terraria example uses tModLoader, called there the community loader and free Steam app 1281930. It compared a 1.4.4.9 decompile with vanilla 1.4.5.8, and the lab launch uses a separate save directory so existing characters stay out of the test.

That is a loader route for one title. It does not say a game without a loader will work the same way.

Many angles of one unit

The Age of Empires II write-up in Universal Modder renders one unit from a 3D model: an orthographic camera, 30 degrees of elevation, 16 headings clockwise from east, then an .sld writer. San Franciscans is that project, not a ready-made civilization.

Read the note before a mashup

Universal Modder's passthrough runs Minecraft and GTA V together and draws one picture into the other. The example names blocks in Los Santos, explosions in both games, and a Nether sequence, tried in September 2026 on GTA V Legacy Steam build 3889, ScriptHookV 3889.0, ReShade 6.8.0, and Minecraft Java 26.3.

Story mode only. The folder is source for those builds, not a finished download and not an online tool.

How to get started with Universal Modder

  1. 1

Match the machine to the README

Universal Modder's README asks for Git, Python 3.10 or newer, and ffmpeg. It recommends uv. Blender is only for 3D-to-sprite renders. AGENTS.md names Pillow, numpy, and PyYAML, and says uv handles them for the CLI.

  2. 2

    Use your agent's install row

Open the Universal Modder README and use the row for the agent you already run. Commands change, so they are not copied on this page.

  3. 3

    Keep the first task small

Search the notes, then ask Universal Modder for one change in a game you own. The README's samples are a Terraria weapon, an Age of Empires II civilization, Minecraft inside GTA V story mode, or which engine one folder is.

  4. 4

    Look in the game

The check Universal Modder describes is the running game, not a sprite sheet alone. On Windows, um win can launch and capture. Elsewhere you supply that check. The three examples are the author's demonstrations.

Models are the other bill. Universal Modder's README points at a fal API key for the MCP server and for um fal, plus a price subcommand so a call can be quoted before it runs. No rate is printed here. Images can use um comfy on a local ComfyUI server instead. Blender is free and open source. Compute, the game, and the coding agent's own plan are outside the MIT grant.

Universal Modder: common questions

Which coding agent does Universal Modder install into?

The agent you already run. Universal Modder's README table lists Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, VS Code / Copilot, and Cursor. AGENTS.md also names OpenCode and anything that reads that file. A CLI-only row uses uv or pipx. The commands stay in the README.

Source
Does an engine playbook mean that game works?

No. A Universal Modder playbook is a route for an engine family, not a pass for every release. Index rows checked here mark Fal Arsenal working on 2026-09-28 (xna-fna, loader API) and San Franciscans working on 2026-09-29 (Genie, data). No note, or a newer patch, means this page does not call that game compatible. "Almost any" is the project's pitch.

Source
Can I generate images without a fal API key?

For images, yes. Universal Modder documents um comfy with a local ComfyUI server when there is no fal key. Sprites, 3D, sound, music, voice, and video on the um fal list need the key, kept out of the mod. The MIT grant includes no model subscription. Local GPU time is not priced here.

Source
Can I download the examples as ready-made mods?

No. Those three examples are source folders plus notes, for the versions they name. Universal Modder's contributing rules forbid game files, extracted assets, ROMs, and decompiled dumps. Write down the lesson. Do not send the game back.

Source
What does the project refuse to do?

Games you own, including a server you host, but not an online client with anti-cheat. Universal Modder's README also refuses cheats against other players and any bypass of anti-cheat, DRM, or ownership checks. The GTA V example is story mode only.
